About photovoice

Thank you for supporting PhotoVoice’s work through the Street Collection sale.PhotoVoice is an award-winning international charity with over 10 years experience in designing and delivering participatory photography projects for marginalised and vulnerable communities. Through photography, the people we work with find the confidence to speak out about their challenges, strengths, hopes and fears and create tools that can be used to advocate for positive social change.Since we began our pioneering projects we have worked to amplify the voices of refugees, people who are blind and partially sighted, street children, landless indigenous tribes, people living with HIV/AIDS and others with differing requirements for inclusion.Photography is a highly flexible tool that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to all abilities. Its power lies in its dual role as an art form and a means to record facts. It provides an accessible way to define realities, communicate perspectives and raise awareness of important social and global issues. In the next two years we will use participatory photography and digital storytelling techniques with children affected by sexual abuse and young people whose lives are impacted by gangs and knife crime. Internationally, we will continue to work with people in post conflict situations and communities suffering the worst affects of climate change.

We hope you will keep in touch with us so you can hear more about our ground breaking projects, attend our lectures, exhibitions, debates and events or come along and meet us in our offices.

PhotoVoice’s vision is for a world in which no one is denied the opportunity to speak out and be heard.

PhotoVoice’s mission is to build skills within disadvantaged and marginalised communities using innovative participatory photography and digital storytelling methods so that they have the opportunity to represent themselves and create tools for advocacy and communications to achieve positive social change.

Working in partnerships with other charities, NGOs and community organisations PhotoVoice designs and delivers tailor-made participatory photography, digital storytelling and self-advocacy projects for socially excluded groups. Our pioneering approach brings together the arts, media, development and social change agendas to work with hard-to-reach groups on projects that give voice, build skills, provide platforms for advocacy and work towards sustainable change.
Why Photography?

Photography is a highly flexible tool that crosses cultural and linguistic barriers and can be adapted to all abilities. Its power lies in its dual role as an art form and a means to record facts. It provides an accessible way to define realities, communicate perspectives and raise awareness of important social and global issues. Its low cost and ease of dissemination encourage sharing and increase the potential to generate dialogue and discussion.Note: the term ‘photovoice’ is also used generically by practitioners to refer to participatory photography methodology. Please see our ‘Methodology’ section for further details about the field of participatory photography.
